There's no better time than today to rediscover the traditional wisdom of yesterday!
Join Herbalist, Teri Lyn Powell, owner of Sage & Sweetgrass Apothecary, for her Kitchen Herbalism class at Smith's Gardentown in Wichita Falls, TX!
Teri has worked with plant medicine and other natural healing modalities for well over a decade, primarily from her apothecary in Quanah, Texas. She has a natural gift for sharing her passion and wisdom of plant medicine in a down-to-earth way that is easy to understand.
This class will be all about rediscovering the art of preparing simple, traditional herbal remedies using everyday ingredients commonly found in most kitchens.
For generations, families have turned to their pantries or gardens to prepare simple remedies for everyday ailments. Much of this knowledge was passed down from our mothers, grandmothers, and ancestors, long before herbal remedies became something we purchased in bottles.
We'll explore familiar ingredients as well as a few surprising household remedies drawn from the cultural diversity found throughout our region.
You may be surprised by how many useful remedies can be prepared using ingredients you already have on hand or can easily find at your local grocery store!
Some of the topics we'll explore include:
Building your own kitchen herbal pantry using simple, affordable ingredients and tools.
Rediscovering traditional uses for familiar kitchen ingredients such as ginger, garlic, cinnamon, cloves, thyme, rosemary, fennel, and more.
Exploring a few unexpected remedies from different cultural and family traditions, including uses for ingredients you may have never considered medicinal.
Preparing herbal vinegars, fire cider, oxymels, herbal honeys, and homemade syrups.
Understanding the differences between herbal teas, medicinal infusions, and decoctions.
Making topical herbal remedies for pain, cold, coughs and skin irritation such as eczema, etc.
Choosing simple kitchen remedies for everyday concerns such as digestive discomfort, gas and bloating, seasonal respiratory complaints, stress, sleep.
Traditional kitchen first aid and other practical household remedies passed down through generations.
Teri will also share personal stories and traditional folk practices that demonstrate how resourceful our ancestors were when caring for themselves and their families.
No previous herbal knowledge is necessary! Whether you're completely new to herbalism or simply want to become more resourceful and confident in preparing remedies at home, this class is designed to be practical, informative, and enjoyable.
Each participant will receive a printed class handout, including basic recipes and preparation methods to take home and use as a reference. Pens will be provided for note-taking.
An herbal tea bar and snacks will also be available throughout the class, featuring a selection of Sage & Sweetgrass herbal blends.
A selection of herbal remedies and other wellness goods from Sage & Sweetgrass Apothecary will be available for purchase following the class.
